5 Beautiful Examples of Georgian Window Shutters For Your Home

Solid Panel Shutters on Georgian Windows scaled

The Georgian period in architecture is defined by classical proportions, symmetry, and an undeniable elegance.

In the West Country, the typical townhouses of the period are represented in abundance amongst the streets of Bath or Clifton, where we conduct many installations of Georgian window shutters.

Georgian period homes are also found in many smaller towns and villages that are equally representative of the Georgian era.

In window terms, they all have one thing in common which is the Georgian sash windows, or sliding sash windows.

These window styles define the buildings and characterise one of the most poignant aspects of Georgian style.

Solid Shutters

Historically, such windows incorporated traditional solid panel shutters for very good reasons, and they would also be complemented by heavy drapes or other window coverings.

Since there was no central heating back in those days, it was all about retaining heat within the home, reducing heat loss, and providing greater security.

The solid window shutters were seen more as a functional addition and it was the curtains that brought the style and status to the windows.

These days, of course, interior shutters are regarded very differently and are seen as the ultimate style statement for trendy interiors and modern Interior Design.

Typically, Georgian sash windows are defined by ‘glazing bars’ which subdivide the sections of glass window.

Solid Panel Georgian Shutters

This is one of the defining characteristics between the Georgian times and the later Victorian periods, which allowed glazed windows to be manufactured in larger sheets, as opposed to the Georgian period which could only manufacture glass in smaller sections.

Large windows mean plenty of natural light, but very often as listed buildings, it also means single glazed.

As such, they can be subject to excessive heat loss during the colder months.

Through this article, I’m going to look at a few examples of projects that we’ve carried out in Georgian houses and illustrate the variety of applications and shutter styles that plantation shutters can bring.

From full height shutters with solid panels to those with slats, there is an answer for every setting to enhance individual style preferences.

Delivering a window dressing that is entirely complementary to the setting and functional for all times of day and evening.

Now let’s jump into one of our favourite Georgian Shutter Projects…

Georgian Project 1 - A Townhouse In Bath

This project is typical of Bath townhouses.

In this case, we have specified our own version of a full height raised panel design.

Which is an accurate representation of the original shutters to fully enhance the period feel.

The shutter panels fold fully back into the window recesses and create an authentic look.

Very close to original solids and with the modern benefit of retaining significant heat insulation when closed at night.

The colour selection is in a subtle off-white, creating timeless elegance from inside but also appearing sympathetic to the terrace from outside too.

Further detail is enhanced by the selection of antique brass hinges and matching knobs to deliver an aesthetic that is truly authentic and original in feel.

A great addition to any period homes interior.

Georgian Project 2 - A Classic Country Home

Here’s a classic example of a country home of the Georgian era where we’ve used solid panels again but this time in a Tier-on-Tier Shutters configuration.

The benefits of enhancing the period feel are evident but the operation of the panels working independently top and bottom gives a really practical and modern twist too.

Once again, a raised panel design is the preferred selection and the colour choice of cream grey with antique brass hinges and knobs is perfect for the setting.

Complementary to the paint colour and tiles within the bathroom and sympathetic to the beautiful old brick when viewed from outside.

A functional feature that not only delivers elegance but also aids with light control and noise reduction.

Georgian Project 3 - A New Build

In this example, we have specified Tier-on-Tier shutters incorporating our medium-sized slats.

These give the maximum amount of flexibility for control of filtered light and privacy, which is unique to louvered shutters as opposed to those of a solid panel design.

The property is a new build constructed to echo the Georgian period and with windows that echo the traditional Georgian style design.

The shutter panels align with the glazing bars on the windows and the window frame allows the panels to be fully folded back to adjacent wall areas on both sides to create a stunning visual aspect to the living space.

A truly ideal solution for homeowners seeking a mix of tradition and practicality.

Georgian Project 4 - Beautiful Hardwood

Another really classic example of Georgian shutters with our large slats.

This example is within a new build home constructed along classic lines, typical of the many homes in Poundbury, Dorset.

We have used a stained version of our slatted shutters to create a subtle appearance when viewed from outside, far less noticeable to the elevation than white and a stunning aspect for the interior to complement the hardwood flooring.

We have also incorporated the beautiful fan light arch in the top section—perfect for the windows and the reflection of our company logo!

Once again, the proportions of the shutters echo the proportions and glazing bars on the windows, so very typical of the Georgian aesthetic.

These internal shutters bring a unique blend of practicality and authentic charm.
