5 Homes Transformed With Made-to-Measure Victorian Shutters

Victorian Shutters

The Victorian period is defined by the reign of Queen Victoria, spanning the majority of the 19th century (1837–1901), commonly referred to as the Victorian era.

It was during this time of mass industrialisation that many people relocated from country villages into towns for work, which then necessitated the building of many homes to accommodate the influx.

These Victorian properties still stand today, rich in Victorian architecture and charm.

The majority by far are in the form of terraced homes in towns and cities.

However, the Victorian period also encompasses many period properties in country areas.

Some are big and some smaller, but the defining feature across them all is the architectural focal point so typical of the period — the Victorian Bay Window.

Victorian Bay Window

Most commonly, these bay windows are seen in three sections, with a larger glass window pane in the centre flanked by two smaller sections angled either side — the ideal canvas for Bay Window Shutters.

As a design feature, Victorian-style bay windows are typically seen on ground and first floor levels.

They bring an extensive addition to the total width of those rooms and introduce a sense of natural light and space.

In the modern era — and something we often encounter in our work as shutter experts — Victorian homes lend themselves beautifully to refurbishment, blending historic charm with contemporary functionality.

This often includes knocking down walls to open up spaces for more light and interior decor, and even the addition of loft rooms in large attic spaces.

All of these areas are ideal solutions for installing Interior Shutters, offering a wide range of benefits including privacy, style, and insulation from heat loss.

Throughout this article, I’ll explore a few of our projects that demonstrate how various styles of shutter — including Solid shutters, Tier on tier shutters, and plantation shutters — can be applied to Victorian sash windows, casement windows, and even patio doors.

Victorian 1 – Full Height Shutters on Bay Windows

Here is a classic example of Victorian Bay Window design, enhanced using large full height shutters.

These wooden shutters include a mid-rail, allowing independent control of slats on the top and bottom sections.

The choice of a cream grey colour perfectly complements the interior and the larger slat size adds a clean and minimal look.

The full aspect of the bay is elevated, while providing excellent control over natural light, privacy, and acoustic comfort.

It’s always surprising how much external noise shutters offer to reduce.

Here, where the property sits on a busy road, the high-quality, made-to-measure shutters crafted from Natural Hardwood virtually cancelled all traffic noise — a testament to the quality materials used, making them the perfect solution for modern living in a Victorian home.

Victorian 2 – Tier on Tier Shutters for Sash Windows

In this instance, we’ve used a Tier on tier shutters design on a similar Victorian-style bay window.

Hinging top and bottom independently (a bit like a stable door), this configuration provides even more different options for natural light and privacy than full height shutters.

These shutters are especially well-suited for Victorian sash windows, a common feature in period properties.

It’s a great example of how different styles of shutters can be adapted to suit traditional homes with a modern touch.

Victorian 3 – Interior Shutters in Converted Apartment

We often work on projects where large Victorian buildings have been converted into stylish modern apartments.

This one, formerly a hospital, is a classic example.

The windows have been brought right up to date with the clean lines of white paint and beautifully crafted wooden shutters, adding a classic minimal feel that aligns with the fabric of the building.

Large panels help shield harsh sun rays and offer complete privacy from neighbouring apartments.

In the bedrooms, we used a specific frame profile that allows the panels to fold fully back against the adjacent window frame — a practical and beautiful feature.

This project is a true showcase of how Interior Shutters can adapt to both function and form in any Victorian property.

Victorian 4 – Solid Panel Shutters as Room Dividers

Here’s an innovative use of Victorian Bay Window shutters, where we’ve also installed solid panel shutters as room dividers.

By opening up the wall between what was formerly the living and dining room, the client created a more open-plan space filled with light.

Of course, the challenge with larger spaces is sometimes the loss of cosy, private areas — and that’s where solid shutters come in.

These solid panel window shutters, crafted using the best hardwood materials, fold flush back into the wall when not needed.

When closed, they offer a sense of seclusion — ideal for zoning areas within a home while maintaining the integrity of the overall design.

Victorian 5 – Shaker Style Solid Shutters in Country Farmhouse

While most Victorian homes were built in towns and cities, many were also established in the countryside.

This farmhouse is a perfect example of a rural period property.

The windows here are casement windows, not Victorian sash windows, yet still very much in keeping with the Victorian architecture of the time.

For this project, we used original shutters in a shaker panel design, crafted from Pine Shutters in solid ash.

These solid shutters offer superb insulation — a crucial element for reducing heat loss through single glazed panes — and provide a timeless, elegant nod to the character of the home.

Every Victorian window shutters project is unique, and with such a wide range of different styles available, the key is to find the perfect fit for each space.

Whether you’re restoring a traditional home or adapting it for modern living, shutter experts can help you choose the style of shutter that brings out the best in your property.
