Georgian window shutters—tier-on-tier vs full-height—at a glance: a brief, design-led guide to choosing what truly suits your window and the way you use the room.
Sash windows—classic to Georgian architecture—lend themselves beautifully to shutters, whether louvred or solid.
We’ve been designing and fitting them since 2004, and the same rule still applies: choose the style that best serves the way you live in the room.
Louvres or Solid Panels?
If you want an authentic period feel, solid panels are the natural choice. For day-to-day light control and privacy, louvres (slats) are wonderfully practical.
From there, the key decision is whether to opt for tier-on-tier or full-height.
Tier on Tier Shutters
Top and bottom sections open independently, giving precise control over privacy and daylight—ideal on tall Georgian sashes and street-facing rooms.
We align tier breaks to the sash meeting rail wherever possible so the design reads as part of the window, not just on it.
Expect a touch more framework; the payoff is genuine flexibility.
Best for: tall sashes, living rooms, home offices, mixed light/privacy needs.
Full Height Shutters
A single, uninterrupted panel line delivers a quieter, more minimal look—beautiful in both formal Georgian rooms and country settings.
Add a mid-rail at the sash meeting point for strength and proportion, or choose solid panels for an elegant, period-correct statement.
Best for: bedrooms, simpler interiors, spaces where you prefer calm, unified lines.
Materials, Colour & Finish
We work exclusively in premium hardwood, which allows crisp detailing, stable operation and a flawless painted or stained finish.
Whites remain timeless, but our palette ranges from soft mid-tones to deep blacks; from natural stains through rich cherry and walnut; and rustic/deep-grain finishes exclusive to us.
We also offer custom colours inspired by Farrow & Ball, Little Greene and other premium paint houses—so shutters sit comfortably within existing joinery and schemes.

Design Notes That Matter
Proportion: louvre size chosen to suit pane dimensions; tier breaks and mid-rails aligned to existing meeting rails.
Usage: tier-on-tier for adaptable street-side privacy; full-height for a clean, uninterrupted elevation.
My Final Thoughts...
There isn’t a right or wrong answer—only the one that fits your window, your room and your routine.
With a thoughtful, design-led approach, both tier-on-tier and full-height shutters elevate Georgian windows and feel completely at home.
